Abstract
There has been a continuous increase in the number of diagnostic X-ray machines in Korea from 82,357 in 2016 to 88,294 in 2018. District-based categorization revealed that Seoul had the largest number of diagnostic X-ray machines(20,505,
23.2%), while Sejong had the smallest number(407, 0.5%). Classification based on the types of X-ray equipment showed
that the portion of general equipment with a separate tube-high voltage (HV) generator used in radiography or fluoroscopy
accounted for the largest proportion (24%, 21,249), followed by general equipment with an integrated tube-HV generator
(22%, 19,069), intra-oral equipment (16%, 14,390), equipment for panoramic imaging (11%, 9,887), dental computed
tomography (12%, 10,430), equipment for bone mineral densitometry (8%, 7,573), mammography equipment (4%, 3,321),
and whole body CT (3%, 2,375). Based on the period of use, 34.1% (30,133) of the total pieces of equipment had been used
for equal or less than 5 years. With the increase in the use of diagnostic X-ray equipment, greater effort will need to be
focused on the safe use of radiological techniques and machinery in medicine.
